CONVOCATION 2008

Aren’t we done with the missional church? This question was asked by a well-meaning colleague. Well, if we are done with being church, then we should be done with missional church.

Being “church” and being “missional” define each other. Growing in our understanding of this is the primary focus for our synod and it is a long-term initiative. Missional churches see themselves as being sent. This sense of being sent on God’s mission permeates everything – worship, witness, teaching, serving, ministry in daily life. These churches try to understand how they are caught up in God’s intent for the world.

There are multiple perspectives on being missional, and our faculty for this event will lead us in broadening our perceptions of what this term means. Cheryl Peterson will give us some distinctly Lutheran understandings, and Stephen Bouman will lead us in biblical and cultural applications. We are again fortunate to have a faculty that can teach us much about what these perspectives could mean for our congregations and for our synod.

If you want to share in the vision, be sure to mark your calendars for October 28-30 and send in your registration by October 13. In addition to the program, there will be time for renewing and developing friendships and for relaxing and re-creating in a beautiful environment at the Lake of the Ozarks.

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE PURPOSE

The Bishop’s Convocation is the theological conference of the Central States Synod, ELCA. It is an opportunity for leaders — lay and ordained — to gather and learn. The program costs are subsidized by the synod. Spouses are welcome as full participants; lay leaders are invited to attend.

AT THE CONVO . . .

  • Augsburg Fortress will bring a bookstore for your convenience, edification, and temptation.
  • A representative from the Board of Pensions will be available to meet individually with those who wish to discuss pension and benefit questions. You may schedule your time at the Convo.
