Stories from around the synod

Congregation Makes Social Justice a Priority: Prince of Peace, Springfield, Mo. -- through the ONE Campaign -- Helps to 'Make Poverty History'

ONE Campaign: The Campaign to Make Poverty History

Last June our Synod took an important step in getting involved in helping the poor. The Assembly passed a resolution making our synod a “ONE Synod.” Churches are being encouraged to become “ONE Lutheran Congregations” and stand together to rally all Americans and Congress to end poverty in our world.

Every time you take in a deep breath and let it out, a child dies from a preventable disease caused by poor nutrition – 30,000 children every day. 400,000 women and girls die during childbirth because they live in such poor conditions. This is not acceptable to Christians.

Prince of Peace became a ONE Lutheran Church. This is our third year of having a “ONE Sunday” where we have an Offering of Letters. We handwrite letters to the Senators and Representatives in Washington, asking them to increase the poverty-focused part of the United States budget by $5 billion. We also ask for support on other poverty issues and the Millennium Development Goals (a worldwide plan adopted by 187 Nations, including the United States, to save the lives of 8 million people who die each year from poverty).

On the ONE Sunday we collect the letters and place them on the altar, bless them, and send them off to Washington. It has become an important part of our ministry. Each year we receive more and more letters from members, their friends and family. People are excited about doing something to help others. Martin Luther knew the power of ONE and the importance of social justice.

Make your Church a “ONE Lutheran Church.” Go to www.elca.org/one and download all the information you need to get started, or call or email us here at Prince of Peace and ask Heather, our office manager 417-881-0833, heathereroberts@sbcglobal.net for an information packet.

You will never regret getting involved and helping the poor.

The ONE Campaign is a new effort to rally Americans, ONE by ONE, to the cause of ending poverty in our world and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Through political action, its goals include:

  • Direct an additional one percent of the U.S. budget to address extreme poverty.
  • Support debt relief for the world’s poorest countries to help them meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
  • Make the rules of international trade fair so all may benefit from the global economy.
